Slamming Spam

I'm coauthor (with Dale Nielsen) of a book called Slamming Spam for Addison-Wesley Professional on the topic of fighting spam. It is available wherever fine books are sold, including Amazon and Bookpool, among other places. The full title is Slamming Spam: A Guide for System Administrators and the ISBN is 0131467166. The home page for the book is slammingspam.com.

Articles, code, talks, etc.

Articles I've written

NANOG19 (6/13/2000) presentation on "Mail Message Metering" a patent pending solution to the problem of outbound spam.
This link contains the slides used at the talk. Use these slides instead of the ones on the NANOG page (below).

The slides were updated after submission to NANOG, so use the ones from the Ziplink site (above) instead.

Taxation without Representation
No, I'm not an ultra conservative or radical trying to lower my taxes. I'm just a New Hampshire resident who pays taxes to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and doesn't have any say into how those tax dollars are spent!

Have you been injured in an accident? I was, and settled the entire case myself except for a half hour of an attorney's time at the very end to go over the paperwork. Would I do it again myself? No way, because if I had seen a lawyer at the beginning, in all likelihood I would have received at least the same amount of money in my pocket and NOT had the huge headache of dealing of a large insurance company. Maybe someday I'll post more details about the entire thing. I find it really sad that big insurance companies don't make the process easier for folks like me who actually prefer not getting lawyers involved.

Pseudo resume and commentary on past employers

I am currently working for Renesys Corporation in Hanover, NH. A bunch of smart people and a very useful product if you/your company has an Autonomous System Number (ASN) assigned to it.

For a while I was an independent consultant, working in the areas of ISP operations, PC and network consulting for all manner of companies. If you are in need of such consulting, please email me!

I most recently worked at at WorldNET Internet Services, an ISP who purchased many of the assets of Ziplink.

Before the company ceased operations on November 17, 2000, I was at Ziplink, Inc. working as Director of Information Technology in Lowell, Massachusetts USA. Before being named Director of IT, I was Senior Unix Administrator for 1.5 years prior to my management role at ZipLink. Ziplink was a casualty of the fall 2000 slowdown in online advertising spending which caused the demise of Firstup.com and a radical business model change for Spinway, Ziplink's two largest customers.

Once upon a time, I was Senior Unix Administrator for the Shiva Corporation (now Intel) in Bedford, Massachusetts USA. It looks like Intel is discontinuing the line of RAS gear developed by Shiva. It's too bad the inventor of the RAS market essentially has to go out of business, but I guess that is the way things go.

I used to work for Time Warner Cable of Maine, a cable TV operator located in Portland, Maine USA where I was the Road Runner System Administrator (how many people can say they had the name of a cartoon character in their title?). The Portland division was the fourth Time Warner deployment of cable modems, and the first to utilize the Toshiba cable modem. Cable modem technology has enormous potential, but as with any immature technology it has it's share of problems as some have pointed out. Phil Karn's page lists many problems with the Road Runner service.

Prior to TW, I worked for 6.5 years (not including co-op time) at Maine Yankee, (what used to be) a 900 megawatt-electric nuclear power plant located in beautiful Wiscasset, Maine USA. My title was Systems Analyst, but I performed the functions of both Unix system administrator and network manager. The plant is now preparing for decommissioning and will no longer produce electricity. Do you know any system administrators that have been inside the containment building of a nuclear power plant?

I graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in August 1990 with a BA in computer science.
